World Series Highlights

NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton restored order in Game 5 of the World Series and gave the Yankees a lead they would not relinquish. But order is relative in this crazy game. Stanton’s high, relatively deep sacrifice fly in the eighth inning off Tommy Kahnle put the Yankees back on top 6-5 after blowing a five-run lead and putting a Dodgers comeback in full swing.

The 1991 World Series was one of the most thrilling in baseball history, with five games decided by a single run, four games going into extra innings and three of the six contests finishing after 10 p.m. The deciding game came down to a wild pitch by Bob Stanley and a Bill Buckner error at first base, and it entered baseball lore as the Curse of the Bambino, the superstition that blamed the Red Sox’s long championship drought on a curse placed upon a young Babe Ruth by a New York newspaper.

This series also saw the first time in Series history that a team from an expansion franchise won the title. The Minnesota Twins beat the Atlanta Braves four games to three in a remarkable matchup that ESPN named one of the greatest World Series of all time.
