World Athletics Championship is a biennial international track and field competition for athletes. It is organised by the IAAF and takes place in a different country each year following the Summer Olympic Games. It was first held in 1983, following the IAAF’s decision to create a separate event from the Olympics.
The 2025 edition of the championships was held in Tokyo, Japan from 13 to 21 September. The decathlon featured a number of twists and turns, including defending champion Damian Warner withdrawing before the start of the final round; runner-up Pierce LePage disqualified for obstructing another athlete in the hurdles; and World record holder Daniel Stahl becoming a three-time medallist with a fine performance in the discus.
On the women’s side, Faith Kipyegon (Kenya) did what she does best and dominated to win the 1500m, beating Dorcus Ewoi in second and Jessica Hull in third. Also winning gold was the defending champion of the marathon, Susanna Sullivan (USA), who clocked 2:24:21 to claim her fourth title, with Tigst Assefa (Ethiopia) and Julia Paternain (Uruguay) finishing in silver and bronze respectively.
The 2024 World Athlete of the Year nominees are Letsile Tebogo of Botswana (200m), Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (100m, 200m and 4x100m) and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (400m hurdles). They join a strong list of previous winners that includes a number of Olympians like Letsile, Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and Noah Lyles, USA’s 100m and 400m double gold medallists and Nicola Olyslagers, who won the high jump to add to her two world indoor titles.
